The Greater Good?

Letter to Charleston, WV  Gazette

November 21, 2000

The Greater Good!

I just learned about the National Park Service New River Valley  Parkway  project, and the plight of the residents i.e., forced off their lands  in  the name of the Greater Good. Unfortunately, theirs is not an  isolated  tragedy in what use to be the land of freedom! More and more  honest, hard working folks in their golden years have becoming victims of bureaucratic Greater Good. Greater Good comes in many flavors:

An improved view shed (too bad if you retired there)!

Roadless, areas (too bad if you ranch there)!

Removal of hydro dams instead of fish hatcheries (too bad if  cities  need the water,  power and flood control)!

Banned farming too protect a rat (too bad if you are the farmer)!

Banned logging (too bad if you need a home built with a renewable resource)!

The bureaucrats preach that through their enlightenment mother earth  can be saved. Never mind that the government holds the record as the greatest polluter of all times, military bases with underground plumes of toxins leaking from underground storage tanks, nuclear weapons  plants where the jackrabbits are radioactive.

Might not the Greater Good, be about bureaucratic power, prestige,  and  money?
