OVERVIEW: We believe that it is in the economic/social/environmental interest of the region to reconsider the alternative of a road so adjacent to the New River and as now put forth by the state, namely the 'parkway' 2a/2d option. We feel the parkway alternative proposed by the WV department of highways to build a two lane parkway along Raleigh county road #26 (New River Road) will forever change the new river gorge and help to pollute/destroy the new river in eventuality. We hope that this effort, to broadly rethink the parkway project, will find a solution that maintains the beauty/culture/natural resources that attract vacationers and create a much needed boost to the area economy.

"We recognize much of the region's economy and continued attraction is based on recreation. The natural mountainous beauty, our rivers and the humility/culture of our peoples are what attract thousands of visitors to west Virginia each year. We must be careful that transportation projects do not jeopardize this key element upon which our future hinges. We encourage people, who are dedicated to the long term interest of this region, to join our effort to understand an issue that, we feel, will destroy our culture and our new river in eventuality. We are seeking the help of all to find a more optimal solution to address the needs of transportation through the New River Gorge corridor.

"Repairs and upgrade to Raleigh county road #26 (New River Road) are seriously needed now to bring this section of the New River Gorge in line for safe and efficient travel both to our year long residents and our tourists. As such, a key thrust of our effort is to demand an alternative that achieves these standards while also meeting the specific needs of the New River and the New River Gorge. We are imploring the WVDOT to promote and detail this much needed upgrade option with the eventual goal of protecting our citizens, our tourists, our culture, our historical landmarks, and the New River in perpetuity."

SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA NEEDS A PARKWAY, BUT IT NEEDS ONE THAT PROTECTS ALL PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND PROMOTES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. THE CURRENT PLAN DOES NOT DO THIS!
