There has not been a tremendous amount of external news on the Parkway Project in the last month, but rest assured we continue to fight for our rights every day by phone, fax, e-mail, and in person. Please help us by writing your Congressman and Senators and letting them you know you oppose the excessive Land grab that is the current plan for the New River Parkway. If you are a West Virginian, write to the governor and your state representative. Thanks!
One of the most astounding things about our efforts to save our homes is the amount of support we receive from all over the country, from groups and mainstream Americans. The consistent theme is always "Good Luck" and "Keep up the Fight". Articles on Property rights also continue to receive much press, both on the Internet and in print journalism mediums such as the Wall Street Journal.
Several links were added this week along with an updated Meeting schedule.
We strongly request that you help us preserve our way of life, family, and and private property rights along the New River. Please let the West Virginia Dept. of Highways; (WVDOH) know that their plan for the Parkway must be open, complete, honest, in plain English and must protect the people of the valley; tell the WVDOH that of the options put forth now, with the limited information given out, you are unable to support any plan for the Parkway. Request an extension of the comment period. Tell the WVDOH that they should allow the people of WV to determine our future, and not be bullied/blackmailed by money from the federal government and other outsiders to do what Washington thinks. We, the people of West Virginia and the New River Valley, are best suited to determine OUR FUTURE!
Tell the WVDOH that their plan leaves out another option that it is required to address, NO BUILD! This road does not have to be built if the planners cannot accommodate the needs and rights of all people in the valley.
Written comments on the New River Parkway Project must be presented in written form by no later than Feb. 5, 2001, to:
Mr. James Sothen, Director Engineering Division Division of Highways Capitol Complex Building 5 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East Charleston, WV 25305-0430WE MUST ADD: Why, when the government had over a year to draft a modified plan, do we get less than 30 days to comment on it?
In last week's Hinton News and Beckley Register Herald, the West Virginia Department of Highways ran large advertisements/notices encouraging people to write to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Huntington to complain of any/all activities which threaten to pollute/damage the river. It appeared under the auspices of protecting the river, but could enforcement suddenly used in a selective manner? Hmm...
|
Did you know that the WVDOH failed to get a permit from the EPA to build a new bridge in Hinton and dumped a bunch of rock in the river?
|
Wonder why the government refused to allow construction of a sewer line to serve the residents of the New River Road?
|
Wonder if the drains that carry the water containing the salt used to clear/melt the snow on the I-64 bridges still discharge into the river? |
We could continue, but that should make the point!
Added, Test of Liberty, a Letter to the Editor that appeared in the Charleston Daily Mail to The Whole Story. Added a section on the Danger of Easements . Updated alternatives section to address the issue of easements. Added additional New Background on the project's context as it relates to the the WVDOH's own publication Right of Way. In your e-mail request that the public comment period be extended on STATE PROJECT X241-125-0.00 (02) FEDERAL PROJECT DE-0062 (804) E NEW RIVER PROJECT, I-64 TO HINTON. Make your request to:

There were two meetings held last week concerning the Parkway project on Thursday. We hope to have more to report later, but given the fact that the WVDOH and the USDOT were giving conflicting answers to the same questions, what else can we conclude except nothing has changed? We can say that of the four options presented for the Parkway, Option 4 (the current plan) is completely unacceptable. Option one on the other hand shows some promise of reason.
Really, nothing much has changed yet.
There is to be another meeting of the New River Parkway Authority this Tuesday. Our representatives will be there, and we will keep you apprised.
Check out the plight of the people of the Columbia River Gorge on their website. If you ever wondered why we are so concerned about the future of our lives and our river valley, this web site gives a chilling and very similar example of a similar big government project gone amuck.
There will be a special meeting regarding the New River Parkway Authority on 11 January, 2001 at the Summers County High School in Hinton. The Parkway Authority/State is supposed to announce its revised options for the Parkway and a new preferred alternative. Please come to this meeting and help protect and safeguard the environment and the livelihoods of the people of the New River Valley.
Two new Articles were added under "The Whole Story." The Articles are Another Land Grab and Govt. Wants Your Land .
Posted a letter to Charleston, WV Gazette about The Greater Good under "The Whole Story " section along with an article titled Greater Good? . Other updates with more pictures and information were added to the site. Added a new section on Government Waste?
Recent coverage of the New River Parkway land grab has included exposure in: "Derry Brownfield Show: Common Sense Coalition"
Recent coverage of the New River Parkway land grab has included exposure in:
Eco-logic Magazine
Paragon Powerhouse
"Vanishing Freedoms".
Independence Radio
We need much more support though. Please Help West Virginia Get a Responsible New River Parkway .
Recent changes to our web site include the addition of two new sections: Are You Next? and NRPA Meetings . We also added yet another picture of an abandoned house owned by the government.
Fox News reported on the plight of the New River residents being displaced by the government for the parkway in a September 14, 2000 broadcast report. The report, titled "Feds to Homeowners: Make Room for a View."
Most disturbing in the report was a National Park Service spokesman quoted as saying they wanted to create an unobstructed "Viewshed." That translates to no people, no buildings, nothing man-made visible from any point ANYWHERE in the valley.
The story can be found at http://www.foxnews.com/national/091400/scenicview_mand.sm l .
