We thought that the NPS was supposed to be in the Valley to protect the environment and the "scenic views.", and make things better.  So, we're amazed by the following photos which were taken together on a single beautiful weekend day in September 2001 within the space of a few minutes. An isolated incident?  Unfortunately not.  This is not staged (we're not that creative!); it really happened and it's as bad as it looks.

Photo 1: A prominent NPS sign at Sandstone Falls with beer cans littered under it.
Photo 2: At the same time Photo 1 was taken, this photo shows a NPS ranger standing approximately 30 feet from the location of Photo 1. The ranger stood there for a good long time. Why does it appear that he was doing nothing with all this and other litter in the area?  Isn't the NPS supposed to be caretaker of this area?
Photo 3:  More litter in the same location at the same time.
Photo 4:   Debris, obviously that's been there for a long time; we wonder why the NPS has not taken steps to clean up such debris in what it deems as one of the most important areas of the valley.  What is their real goal?

NOTE: We know that no one can prevent all littering (anyone who litters needs their head examined), but this is one of the prime spots on the river and the litter was right under the NPS' nose on a very busy weekend!  If the NPS cannot take care of what it has already, why do they need our land too for a parkway that will bring even more people, and inevitably more litter, to the area?

A sign of things to come?
