Definitions

Here's some definitions & acronyms for the terms we use. This list will grow over time.

conservation easement - see special section on this topic.

DEIS - draft environmental impact study.

EIS - environmental impact study - a study done to determine the totality of affect on the environment that would be caused by a project such a a road, dam, building, etc.

EPA - Environmental Protection Agency (federal)

FEIS - Final Environmental Impact Statement

LMS - Land Management System

NPS - National Park Service (federal - depart of the Department of the Interior)

NRPA - New River Parkway Authority (multi-county authority in WV)

ROD - Record of Decision - Government final decision on the plan for the project.

SDEIS - supplemental draft environmental impact study.

view shed - Defined by NPS to be anything that you can see from any location on the road.  The NPS has stated it wants an unobstructed View Shed, meaning no people, buildings, or structures in the way of viewing the landscape.

WVDOH - West Virginia Division of Highways (part of West Virginia Department of Transportaiton)

WVDOT - West Virginia Department of Transportation
