Breaking SDEIS News

At its April meeting (April 1, how appropriate), the NRPA announced that a Public Hearing about the SDEIS, which is apparently now complete, would  be held May 7, 2002 4-7 PM at Summers County High School RT.20 near Hinton. At that time official forms for written comment will be available with a deadline of June 7 to have them mailed in. Also a court reporter will be available at this same meeting to take official taped statements from those who do not wish to send in a written comment.

Please come and help us ensure a New River Parkway for the good of all.  Please prepare for  writing a statement opposing the effects of any plan that takes land from any non-willing seller, that cites environmental studies not done specifically in support of this project, or that in any way is a veiled attempt  to take people out of the valley under the guise of the road improvement project.

Statements do not have to be long. Example Statements:

I am not a willing seller!.
I am against conservation easements.
I believe the plan has an adverse and unnecessary impact on the environment.
I am against the plan for the road because it does not adequately safeguard the environment.
There is no reason why the plan must not allow people of the valley who want to remain on their land to do so.
The landowners in the valley already do an adequate job of caring for the well-being of the environment.
New wildlife, such as otter, geese, and beavers, are just beginning to return to the valley.  As it is currently planned I feel this road will set-back that process.
Given its recent track record with other projects in the state, the West Virginia DOH cannot be trusted to adequately and fairly assess the impact of this project on our land, homes, and environment.
We should not sell out the land-owners to benefit tourists, which will bring traffic, smog, and congestion to the area.
We should not sacrifice the land-owners for the benefit of arbitrary, and unproven, environmental idealism.
I am opposed to the New River Parkway as supported by this study because it will exacerbate environmental issues in the valley.
Man and nature must co-exist.
I do not believe the plan adequately addresses the real issues in the valley with the road.

What's wrong with this SDEIS and the process?

The developers of the plan took over two and a half years to develop the plan, in secret.  Freedom of Information Act requests about the plan were ignored or disregarded by the state of federal agencies. Now the public is getting only about two months to analyze it and provide comments.  That's wrong! What are they hiding?
There is no information about the SDEIS on the West Virginia Department of Highway's web site? The state does not appear to want to share this information with the public?  What are they hiding? The web would be a fantastic venue for freely distributing the study to citizens, and similarly taking in legitimate comments on the project?
